OVERVIEW
Virgin Falls State Natural Area has become one of our favorite places. The trail meanders through the woods before descending down to Big Laurel Falls at about 2.5 miles. This would be a great turnaround for a shorter day hike, or you can continue to Virgin Falls, which makes around a 9 mile or so roundtrip. Virgin Falls is a breathtaking 110 foot waterfall that emerges from a cave at the top then disappears into another cave at the bottom. There is a large area to sit near the waterfall so bring a camping chair and enjoy a very scenic lunch. :) The wildflowers are abundant here in the spring, and most likely the waterfall will be absolutely roaring. If you have the energy, take the spur trail to Martha's Pretty Point, a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the Caney Fork River.Â
TRAILHEAD INFO
The trailhead is located near Sparta, TN. You have to drive on a few miles of gravel road to reach the trailhead. It can get crowded on nice days, but don't let that deter you as the scenery is definitely worth it. There is a port-a-potty at the trailhead.
